Mount Longonot may not have erupted in more than a hundred years but there is still some remnants of volcanic activity within the crater and as steam rises from the surrounding bush, you cannot help but wonder in terms of just how long it might be until things change. The 1 night/2 day tour will take you to the rim of Mt Longonot Crater and down into the caldera itself, where you will hike and then experience camping in Mt Longonot Crater for the night.
What You’ll See
Camping in Mt Longonot Crater is a trek and overnight wild camping experience for those who have hiking experience, a reasonable level of fitness and open mind. Although it is known for being home to leopard, hyrax and several more animal species, this tour is more suitable for the intrepid traveler rather than somebody wishing for a safari. The bush is thick and dense making it difficult to sight the occupants of the crater but even just knowing they are there should be a delight for those who keep an open mind. Put simply, the views from the crater rim are spectacular, the trek is challenging, the forest is thick, the camping is wild and the feeling of sleeping in an ancient caldera is mystifying.
When You’ll Go
The Camping in Mt Longonot tour starts daily at 8am from the park entrance but must be reserved in advance. Having hiked to the crater rim with your guide (Approx 1 – 2 hours), the Mt Longonot tour will descend carefully into the crater (approx 30 minutes) before you continue following the guide as he hacks and guides you across the crater floor (approx 4 – 5 hours) which is deceivingly hilly with a large number of obstacles including felled trees. Following a challenging trek across the crater floor, you will reach a beautiful green open space among the trees which the local guide has identified on a number of expeditions into the crater since 2012.
Your Guide
Your lead guide is an experience climber and expert on trekking on Camping in Mt Longonot National Park so expect an informative experience with a local who knows the area as he does his own home.
Please note: The descent into the crater is tricky and the hike across the crater floor is quite physical. Although a highly experienced guide will accompany you, it should be taken into account that this trek will require a reasonable level of fitness.
